Got him!

It took several early morning attempts to get close to this fella without spooking him:


This was shot at 1/30 sec, f/8, ISO 1600 at 600mm (300mm plus a Tokina 2x TC) on a monopod. The image as recorded was about a stop underexposed, but at 1/15 sec it’s pretty hard to get a clean shot at this focal length, even with the monopod and Pentax Shake Reduction. The working range of SR is about 4 stops (ie, you can leave the shutter open 4 stops longer) and still get a sharp image, but this is about 5 stops of compensation.

Not bad, but a sharp f/2.8 lens is still in my letter to Santa this year.
